Chapter 26 – West and Central Africa

 

Monday-  Section 1, “The Sahel”  pages 541-546

vocabulary:  shifting agriculture, forage, deforestation, desertification, refugee, landlocked, inland delta

Students will learn that the Sahel was once the site of influential African cultures and today is home to a number of countries that struggle to be self-sufficient.

 

Tuesday-  Section 2, “The Coastal Countries”  pages 547-550

vocabulary:  coup, ancestor worship, animism

Students will learn that most countries along the coast of West Africa have been in political and economic turmoil since achieving independence.

Wednesday-  Section 3, “Nigeria”  pages 552-554

vocabulary:  World Bank, International Monetary Fund, structural adjustment program

Students will learn that if Nigeria can maintain political stability, its rich resources can offer the region great opportunity.

Thursday-  Section 4, “Central Africa”  pages 555-559

vocabulary:  watershed, mercenary, barter

Students will learn that although Central Africa is rich in resources and culture, some areas face economic and political hardship.
