Unit 5 – Central Europe and Northern Eurasia

 

Monday:     Unit 5 Preview, pages 370-385

Chapter 19, Section 1 – “Poland”  pages 389-391

vocabulary:  national identity, ghetto, Holocaust

Students will learn that despite political hardships in the past, the Polish people have maintained their national identity.

 

Tuesday:     Section 2 – “The Czech and Slovak Republics, and Hungary”

vocabulary:  velvet revolution, collective farm, privatization

Students will learn that the Czech and Slovak Republics and Hungary face new challenges after previously being under communist control.

 

Wednesday:     Section 3 – “The Balkan Peninsula”  pages 398-403

vocabulary:  balkanize, entrepreneur, multiplier effect

Students will learn that the geography of the Balkans has isolated its people into small and often hostile political and ethnic groups.

 

Thursday:     Section 4 – “The Baltic States and Border Nations”  pages 406-411

vocabulary:  annex, diversify

Students will learn that the Baltic states and border nations have established new international relations in the years since the fall of the Soviet Union.

 

Friday:     Plato Lab – Research on individual countries of Central Europe and Northern Eurasia.
