Students will learn that Brazil’s various regions have very different physical and human characteristics and face many challenges.

Students will learn that many Brazilians have benefited from economic development, but poverty and environmental harm are major problems.

Students will work in small groups discussing and answering questions over Brazil.

Week of October 28th

Chapter 11 – “Central America and the Caribbean”

 

Monday –

Section 1, “Central America” pages 237-242

vocabulary:  isthmus, guerilla

Students will learn that Central America is a region of widely varied physical and human features, and has often been the scene of political conflict.

Students will learn that the Caribbean islands depend on agriculture and tourism.  Many islanders have emigrated in search of other opportunities.

Students will work in small groups and discuss questions covering Central America and the Caribbean Islands.

Study countries for map test.

 

Thursday –

PLATO Lab –  Students will research various countries of Central America and the Caribbean and present their findings on Friday.

 

Friday –

Students will present a video and give an oral presentation over their assigned countries!

 

Week of October 21st

Monday –

Preview of Unit 3, “Latin America”  pages 202-217

vocabulary:  conquistadors, cultural convergence, caudillos, pampas, cays, coral, tropical storms, hurricanes, El Nino, mestizos, mulattoes

Students will get a general overview of Latin America.

Tuesday –

Chapter 10, Section 1 – “Mexico”  pages 221-225

Students will learn that in each region of Mexico, climate, landforms, and other geographic factors affect economic activities.

 

Wednesday –

Chapter 10, Section 2 – “A Place of Three Cultures”  pages 227-231

vocabulary:  hacienda, land redistribution, ejido, subsistence farming, latifundio, cash crop, migrant worker, NAFTA, maquiladora

Students will learn that historical developments and current social conditions affect economic activities in Mexico.

Film study of “How the States Got Their Shapes” series.

Students will learn how our state borders were formed by various reasons, including physical geography.
