Monday-  Preview of Unit 7 – Africa  pages 504-519

Students will learn about the history, climates, ecosystems, and cultures of Africa.

 

Tuesday-  Chapter 25 – North Africa

Section 1, “Egypt”  pages 523-529

Students will learn that the Nile River, Muslim culture, and urbanization have helped form the distinctive character of modern Egypt.

 

Wednesday-  Section 2, “Libya and the Maghreb”  pages 531-537

Students will learn that Libya and the Maghreb nations share cultural patterns but have different resources, governments, and economies.

Students will present short films over different locations in Africa

 

Week of January 28th:

Chapter 23 – “The Countries of Southwest Asia”

 

Monday-  Section 1, “Creating the Modern Middle East” pages 469-474

vocabulary:  mandate, Zionist, self-determination

Students will learn that throughout recorded history, the Middle East has been a desirable and hotly contested region.

 

Tuesday-  Section 2, “Israel”  pages 475-481

vocabulary:  drip irrigation, potash

Students will learn that Israel struggles to maintain peace among its diverse population and with its Arab neighbors.

 

Wednesday-  Section 3, “Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and Iraq” pages 482-487

vocabulary:  Fertile Crescent, militia, anarchy, embargo

Students will learn that all these countries share a similar past and a variety of new challenges for the future.

 

Thursday-  Section 4, “Arabian Peninsula”  pages 488-492

vocabulary:  desalination, infrastructure, falaj system

Students will learn that the discovery of oil in the Arabian Peninsula has changed the lives of the people of this region.

 

Friday-  Section 5, “Turkey, Iran, and Cyprus”  pages 496-499

Students will learn that these nations have diverse populations, new economies, and political unrest.

Tuesday-  Finish video presentations on Central European countries.

Wednesday-  Chapter 22, Section 1 – “The Caucasus Nations”  pages 455-458

Students will learn that the Caucasus nations are rich in natural resources and are home to many ethnic groups.

Chapter 2o – Russia

 

Monday-  Section 1,  “Regions of Russia”  pages 415-418

Students will learn that Russia’s varied regions provide the nation with many resources, but access to these resources is not always easily available.

Students will learn that Russia has a history of authoritarian rule, but more recent democratic reforms offer hope to many people.
