Chapter 23 – “The Countries of Southwest Asia”

 

Monday-  Section 1, “Creating the Modern Middle East” pages 469-474

vocabulary:  mandate, Zionist, self-determination

Students will learn that throughout recorded history, the Middle East has been a desirable and hotly contested region.

 

Tuesday-  Section 2, “Israel”  pages 475-481

vocabulary:  drip irrigation, potash

Students will learn that Israel struggles to maintain peace among its diverse population and with its Arab neighbors.

 

Wednesday-  Section 3, “Jordan, Lebanon, Syria, and Iraq” pages 482-487

vocabulary:  Fertile Crescent, militia, anarchy, embargo

Students will learn that all these countries share a similar past and a variety of new challenges for the future.

 

Thursday-  Section 4, “Arabian Peninsula”  pages 488-492

vocabulary:  desalination, infrastructure, falaj system

Students will learn that the discovery of oil in the Arabian Peninsula has changed the lives of the people of this region.

 

Friday-  Section 5, “Turkey, Iran, and Cyprus”  pages 496-499

vocabulary:  secular, shah, ayatollah

Students will learn that these nations have diverse populations, new economies, and political unrest.
